Overcoming borders, shaping the future
20 years of commitment by the state of Baden-Württemberg in the Danube region
For 20 years now, the state of Baden-Württemberg has been particularly committed to strategic cooperation in the Danube region. Fifteen years ago, the EU Strategy for the Danube Region was launched. This policy priority devotes special and sustained attention to the integration and development of South-Eastern Europe, underpinned by the realisation that a strong, united, democratic Europe living in peace and freedom can only emerge if the integration of South-Eastern Europe is successful.
At a time of multiple crises, geopolitical tensions and ongoing attacks on freedom, self-determination and the rule of law, it is more important than ever to develop shared European perspectives and to advance practical cooperation at all levels. Against this backdrop, key questions arise: How should the current situation be assessed? Where do the greatest challenges lie? And what responses can Europe offer? This is particularly true with regard to the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, against the backdrop of Russia’s ongoing war of aggression.
The Danube connects ten countries and stands for diversity, exchange and cooperation in Europe. The International Danube Festival Ulm/Neu-Ulm has been a living expression of this idea since 1998: it brings people together, promotes cross-border encounters and strengthens mutual understanding. As an important festival with a focus on south-eastern Europe, it offers a platform for political discussions and shared perspectives for the future - with cities and regions as important promoters of dialogue and a stable, democratic Europe.
The event on 4 July provides a dedicated platform for information and discussion on key issues concerning Europe’s future and current challenges – with a particular focus on Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova. It is aimed at all citizens with an interest in politics, representatives of institutions and international guests who are gathering in Ulm and Neu-Ulm for the opening celebrations.
