Donaufest Factory - Alice Francis meets Bucharest Jazz Orchestra

It is the idea of overcoming boundaries and discovering new horizons that lies behind the Donaufest Factory encounter project. In 2024, we will be presenting a special kind of concert evening for the fourth time. These special concerts are initiated and realised premieres of the Donaufest and promise unforgettable live moments. On this evening, the two formations will present their own repertoire as well as the results of the rehearsal days in Bucharest. The aim of their time together was to develop pieces in which the souls of both bands intertwine and the musicians become a "new band".
It was 10 years ago that the then still unknown electro-swing artist from Cologne, Alice Francis, was a guest at the Donaufest. A lot has happened since then. Tours have taken the Romanian-born artist around the globe. In 2022, she took part in the successful series "Eldorado KaDeWe", playing a role and contributing to the soundtrack. The song "Was soll euch stören" about the homosexual relationship between two women in the 1920s was written by Inga Humpe and Matthias Petsche. The music for the series won the German Television Award.
The last two albums "Electric Shok" and "Club Noir" saw the first collaborations with the Bucharest Jazz Orchestra. This gave rise to the idea of a joint concert. The Bucharest Jazz Orchestra was founded in 2012 on the initiative of trumpet player Sebastian Burneci under the direction of conductor Simona Strungaru. Like Alice Francis, their sound is characterised by vintage jazz and swing.
Despite the distance between Cologne and Bucharest and the sheer logistical challenge of a full orchestra, a one-off concert between the two formations took place in 2022 at Castel Nikolici Rudna in northern Romania. As this type of artistic pairing is exactly what our Factory concept is all about, we invited them to Ulm for a new edition of this special encounter. They have accepted this challenge and will ignite a brilliant 120 minutes of swing fireworks on stage exclusively for the International Danube Festival.
