Literary nightcap - Where the rivers lead

Authors from Ulm and the surrounding area read from their own works

To round off the Danube Day, there will once again be the tried-and-tested nightcap readings in cooperation with the Künstlerhaus Ulm. Authors from Ulm and the surrounding area will read from their own works for half an hour on five evenings. The theme will be escape from time, escape to the future and, of course, the Danube and its waters. After the readings, the evenings will end with a cosy nightcap atmosphere.

Hanne and Ruben meet at the Notting Hill Carnival in London. They spend the evening together and the following morning on the Thames. He tells her about his youth in Sarajevo. It could also have been a youth in London. If only he had stayed with his English father and not returned to Bosnia with his mother when she was homesick. Then he would have been spared the war.
'Actually,' he said, 'we are all one. He looked at the river, lost in thought. The Miljacka flows through Sarajevo, he said, and he used to walk along its banks with his mother. As a young boy, he had always wondered where all the rivers led to. The Miljacka, for example, he said, flows into the Bosna, and the Bosna into the Danube, and the Danube into the Black Sea."

Silke Knäpper
Born in Ulm in 1967, studied German, Romance and English language and literature in Vienna, Freiburg, Paris and Cologne. She has taught at home and abroad, including at the Arts Educational School in London. At the publishing house Klöpfer &Meyer published the three novels Rapeseed does not flower in November, Court child and Loving otherswith KaWe8 the narrative No matter where you wake up. Silke Knäpper is a member of PEN Germany, VS Baden-Württemberg and the Meersburger Autorenrunde. In 2022/2023 she was the co-director of the Literary Forum Upper Swabia in Wangen im Allgäu.
