New Developments – 24th Ulm Art Triennial

The 24th Ulm Art Triennial, running from 11 July to 30 August 2026, invites visitors to discover the region’s contemporary art in all its diversity. Since its foundation in 1955 – initially as a biennial, and every three years since 1961 – it has been the central platform for contemporary artistic creation from Ulm, Neu-Ulm and the Alb-Donau district. It offers insights into a vibrant, multifaceted art scene that shapes the region and has an impact beyond its borders. The Triennial fosters dialogue between art and the public. It creates spaces for exchange, encounters and new perspectives, and in particular provides a platform for younger and as yet little-known artists to present themselves to a wider audience for the first time and to gain recognition beyond the regional scene.

In 2026, too, the exhibition will be organised through the tried-and-tested collaboration between the Museum Ulm, the Kunstverein Ulm, the Künstlergilde Ulm e.V. and the Bund Bildender Künstler (BBK) Ulm – Künstlerhaus Ulm. Due to the major refurbishment of the Museum Ulm, the Triennial will be presented on the premises of the partner institutions. The three-part exhibition will be complemented by a varied programme of events designed to deepen the exchange of ideas and open up new ways of engaging with art.

The 2026 Triennial derives particular appeal from its temporal and thematic link to the International Danube Festival. Thematically, it takes up the motif of the river. As a unifying and transformative element, the Danube symbolises movement, change and exchange – as a continuous flow of ideas, perspectives and artistic positions. Artists who were born, live or work in Ulm or Neu-Ulm, in the Alb-Donau district or in the Neu-Ulm district were invited to take part in the 24th Ulm Art Triennial and to submit artworks created over the past three years. The selection of applicants was carried out by an independent five-member jury, comprising art historians and artists recommended by the organising institutions.
