Ulm's leaning art tower on the Danube

Built in 1340 before the cathedral, Ulm's Metzgerturm tower was once part of the old city wall built partly of wood directly on the Danube. Due to the lowering of the Danube water level when the city wall was rebuilt in 1480, the tower slowly but steadily sank towards the north-west until the leaning tower was stabilised with a concrete foundation in 1911. With an angle of inclination of 3.3 degrees, the 36.1 metre high Metzgerturm is not so far removed from the inclination of the Leaning Tower of Pisa (3.97°).

In April 2022, Johannes Pfeiffer's rope installation turned the tower into an art object. Since 13 May 2026, the Ulm Metzgerturm has been transformed into a vertical gallery thanks to the efforts of the city of Ulm and the Kunstverein Ulm. The first exhibition shows new works by Johannes Pfeiffer. As five of the six floors can only be reached via steep wooden stairs, a maximum of 10 people are allowed in the Metzgerturm at any one time. Short waiting times are therefore possible.
